Raud Rosenstrips Eple

Locally called Raud Rosenstrips, this is a special group of apples typical of western Norway. The oldest clones probably spread from the areas of Hardanger and Sogn. The apple was reviewed by Marcus Schnabel in 1781, but is expected to be much older.

The apple should be categorized separately by location i.e. Hardanger Rosenstrips and Sogne Rosenstrips, as they are different clones. The Sogne Rosenstrips is a winter apple that can be stored and eaten all winter long, where the Hardanger version is a summer fruit that can be eaten until November. Today, there are very few of the apples grown in the historic area and none of the produce is sold commercially.

The peel is medium-thick, a little bit tough, and appears smooth and glossy. Though the main color is green-yellow, it is usually covered by dark red, which sometimes takes the form of stripes. Inside, the pulp is yellow-white with a touch of green. The consistency is loose, tender and just slightly juicy. The taste is sweet-sour with a little aroma. It is primarily used as a table fruit.
