Zimbabwe

Masvingo

There are about 400 pupils who come from the local community. The secondary school teaches farming as its main practical subject but had no field or garden on which the students could put into practice what they were taught.
Creating a two-acre school garden under the A Thousand Gardens project has enabled the students to develop their skills in sustainable farming. Students, staff and the local community all benefit from the vegetables grown in and harvested from this garden. The project required the following material; fencing material, a water pump, garden tools, and training on organic farming.
The students of Chinhoyi University, close to the community, and Mfurudzi Park are involved in the garden project to undertake farming research to document the whole project cycle supporting the school. This can allow the community to document the lessons which are the key for future support in order to repeat and improve the 1000 Gardens project.

Slow Food in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe is one of the poorest countries in Southern Africa. Its economy is based on the extraction of metals and subsistence agriculture. Though farmers—mostly women—make up the majority of the population, they are not sufficiently involved in decisions about the nation’s growth process. In order to try to give rural families a stronger and more cohesive voice, Slow Food launched the 10,000 Gardens in Africa project here. A small local network provides tools and training in the field to promote natural agriculture.
