Garai is a variety of figs (Ficus Carica L.) from Djebba, a small village in Tunisia that registers 17 different figs varieties.
Perched on the heights of Mont el Gorrâa in Tunisia, the gardens of Djebba el Olia form a unique agroforestry system. Located at an altitude of 600m, the communities have shaped this mountainous landscape to their advantage by integrating agriculture on terraces created by natural geological formations.
Garai trees are 3-5m tall and gives a sweet green fruit when ripe with a diameter of 2-4cm.
This variety is at high risk of extinction as there are only 4 to 5 trees left in Djebba. Garai is mainly used for transformation into jam or pastry like Magroud, Samsa or Rfis Tounsi.
