The Augsburg chicken is considered to be a robust, willful, freedom-loving breed; it is good at foraging for food and is famous for its distinguishing crown. The production area is the region of Swabia in Bavaria with its capital Augsburg. Bred around 1870 in Augsburg, it enjoyed great popularity in the region of Swabia, partly also in surrounding regions. It is the only indigenous chicken breed of Bavaria. The Augsburg chicken needs plenty of exercise and is a perfect chicken for extensive breeding. Its meat has a darker colour than common chicken, an intense taste and is very juicy. The hen lays up to 180 tasty eggs per year.
