The garden is a learning platform originally launched by teachers and pupils under the guidance of Developing Innovations in School Cultivation (project DISC) in 2006. A wide range of vegetables like nakati (African eggplant) cabbages, local crops such as bugga, nsusuti and kkobe, pumpkins and tubers like cassava and sweet potatoes are planted alongside fruit trees like bananas, jackfruits, papaya, pineapples. The gardening activities are done by the pupils with the close supervision and guidance of the teachers and the school administration. The participation of students in the school gardening activities is interest oriented: no one is forced to cultivate as it used to be in the past. The produce is not sold nor distributed to individual teachers and pupils, but cooked by the participating children with the help of the school chef and served to them as a supplement to the normal school lunch, composed mainly of beans and posho (a dish of maize flour). Sometimes the produce is reserved for the end of term party, which is supported by the school and organized by the pupils. Ever since the garden was launched, participating children have enjoyed educational tours to some already established gardens for more experience and appreciation of small scale farming efforts in Uganda.
