The Upendo group (the name means ”love” in Swahili) – which includes 8 people affected by HIV or other serious diseases – has been working since 2009 and in 2012 it joined the One Thousand Gardens project, when, thanks to the support of Slow Food committees in the Namtumbo district, it obtained the task of managing a government-owned plot.
The plot is about 1,500 m² and is located near the local primary school, not far from a small stream of water. The members if Upendo have planted about 70 fruit trees (papaya, avocado, guava, orange, lemon and Annona Cherimola trees) and many varieties of vegetables, including tomatoes, beans, bayberry, sweet potatoes and corn. A large part of the seeds used are produce at the garden itself.
The people involved in the project have benefited from a training on composting techniques and natural defense methods against insects and plant diseases, which are now applied in the management of the garden.
