Klo-Dze is a village near Akuse in the Lower Manya district of the Eastern region. The inhabitants of this village are mainly fishers and rice farmers. The school’s management committee approached the Slow Food Accra Convivium to assist them in establishing a school garden after an awareness-raising program.
The size of the school garden is about a quarter of an acre and the garden is tended by a total of 60 pupils, from classes 4 to 6. Crops planted in the garden include plantain, peppers, tomatoes and garden eggs (eggplant).
The school has benefited from training carried out by the Accra Convivium, which covered topics like composting, water management, pest management and using the garden for practical lessons.
Produce from the garden is used to supplement the food cooked for the pupils.
