The Manja are a small ethnic group belonging to the larger group of the Dawro, who live in the region in south-west Ethiopia which goes by the same name. Near the elementary school built by a Catholic mission near the village of Gassa Chare, in the Manja area, a 2,800 square meter school garden has been created.
The garden, fertilized mainly with manure, produces local varieties of cabbage and cauliflower, carrots, red turnips, onions, garlic, tomatoes, ginger, beans, peas and corn. Fruit trees also grow in the garden: local mango, apple and peach varieties.
Water is available throughout the year, thanks to a nearby spring and a small artificial lake which collects rainwater.
