This garden belongs to Mzee Phillip Lowdar and Mama Margret Phillip. The couple live, farm and garden on two acres in Chesta village. They have dedicated one acre of this piece of land to gardening where they cultivate maize, banana, pumpkin, cowpeas, black night shade, and millet, among other tradition vegetables. They also raise 3 goats for milk production. The garden is located at the foot of Mt. Kooghio, which is about 1300 metres high. The family is basically nomadic, however, in recent years they began farming and gardening. They also keep domestic animals and have 20 goats, 8 cows and 6 chickens.
This family provides labour in the garden, shares the produce for consumption at home and sells a portion to generate income. The family members are Mzee Phillip, his wife, Margret, their 7 children, and their 4 grandchildren.
