The garden of the Dar Es Salaam Prime high school is located in Bunju, north of Dar Es Salaam. The school is attended by about 200 students (120 boys and 80 girls) and has a garden which covers more than one and a half hectares. Students grow various varieties of local plants, including amaranth, sweet potatoes and cassava, whose leaves are a key ingredient in man traditional Tanzanian recipes.
The students’ parents pay a small contribution to purchase the garden harvest, so that they can cook it and eat it together.
Who are RESEWO
Regent Senior Women’s Group (RESEWO) is a local association which works to promote the reintroduction of vegetables into the Tanzanese diet, as this produce is an important source of nutrition which can improve the well-being of the community. Since malnutrition unfortunately continues to be a problem across the country, Resewo would like to raise awareness of the fact that one of the key factors of this problem is the low consumption of fruit and vegetables in daily diets. In addition to this many traditional products are being ignored and are rapidly disappearing from plates in Tanzania. To change this situation RESEWO organizes various activities to promote the cultivation and the use of indigenous vegetables. Some activities:
• Education and promotion about the cultivation and use of indigenous vegetables
• Distribution of local seeds
• Development of family gardens for the members of RESEWO
• Cultivation of local vegetables in the community gardens
