The Ankarinarivo Manirisoa garden is on about 1.3 ha of land, located 8 km to the south of the village of Fianarantsoa, along the road heading towards Ikalamavony. It is tended by a group of three families who total 18 people. The families have never collaborated with other projects: the Slow Food 10,000 gardens in Africa is the first to be promulgated in this area. Garden work up to the sale of the produce is coordinated by the group’s women. The garden has two types of land: the first is a surface of about 100 ares and is contoured land in terraces, cultivatable in the rainy season when water is abundant, but it needs to be irrigated during the dry season. The second is a rice paddy of 30 ares for growing rice in the main season and off-season produce otherwise. One of the families’ great assets is growing flowers. The families use completely organic fertiliser from vegetable compost, that they buy on site and enrich it with manure from their cattle.
