The community garden is at the northern edge of the city of Fianarantsoa and stretches over about 50 ares (about 5,000 square metres), occupied by 10 families who are not organised into associations. Different produce is grown in the garden, like peppers and various salad greens, aubergines, onions, beans, brassicas, pepper, and root vegetables like taro, manioc, sweet potatoes; rice is also grown. All the produce is destined for personal consumption and family subsistence. With Slow Food’s support, the families were trained in growing techniques and giving culinary value to their products. The families no longer use chemical products, but their meeting with Slow Food has only reinforced their attachment to organic growing. Because the garden is quite close to the lowlands, water is not a problem.
