The family garden of Ambatolahy is located 27 km south of the city of Fianarantsoa on the national road no. 7 towards Tulear, 18 km south-west of Fianarantsoa as the crow flies. Ambatolahy is located in Fokontany of Andohasahamarina, in the rural commune of Atalata ampano, district of Vohibato, region of High Matsiatra. The garden is managed by 10 families, with 30 people in total. The heads of families are members of the association 2FTM, partners of VOIALA MADAGASCAR in the context of the reforestation project in Ambalamarina. But due to the fact that their fields are located far away in comparison with the other members, they have chosen to establish this new garden. The families possess two types of plots of land to implement the project. The first type consists of rice fields of 25 acres and the second type, referred to as “morotambina” (around the rice fields) of 25 acres. They also have 4 ponds in the garden area to farm fish species such as Tilapia and Lautica. The water drawn from the ponds is also used to water the plants. They produce crops such as “pibasy” (eriobotrya japonica, rosaceae), “akondro” (musa sapientium, musaceae), “mananasy”, peas, “anamarebaka”, “petsaï”, “sakay be”, “tsaramaso” (Phaseolus sp, leguminosa), “paiso” (amygdalus persica, rosaceae), “manga” (mangifera indica, anacardiceae), “ravindahasa” (cyperus sp), “kajaha” (manihot utilissima, euphorbiaceae), “mbizo” (ipomea batata, dioscoreaceae), “fary” (saccharum officinale, graminae), “voatabia” (lycopersicum esculentum, solanaceae), zucchini and salad. These crops are intended for family consumption and the remainder is sold on the market with a view to purchasing other essential products for the household.
