The Ambalakilonga site is 3.5 km to the northeast of the centre of Fianarantsoa. It is an educational and professional training centre for needy children in Fianarantsoa. The 60 people who look after the garden consist of youths who are welcomed by the foundation centre whose garden produce will partly stock their canteen during school and training periods.
The garden has been planted at 1,123 m above sea level, inside the “Exodus Onlus” foundation grounds. The centre takes up about 1.5 ha set aside for the garden to produce vegetables and fruit trees for the canteen. The land is managed in small, 5 m2 plots, and the paths are in place. There is an area for fertiliser.
Since the land is high up, the centre has a well that is used to pump water for daily irrigation of the produce during the dry season. But in the rainy season, it is used only occasionally. The centre raises laying hens. The manure from these hens goes directly to fertilise the garden. The garden has different products such as grapes, carrots, beans, peaches, bibasse (loquat fruit), courgettes, bananas, mangoes, coffee and papayas.
