This family garden’s owners were made aware of the Slow Food philosophy and were all the more motivated when they found out about the important role that family gardens play in food security in Africa, especially as concerns the production and promotion of local food crops. Mrs. Akinsola, the proprietor of the garden, participated in the first Terra Madre day event and lecture at the Egbeda local Government; there she developed a keen interest in cultivating a garden to produce local food for daily consumption and for selling.
The garden, which is very close to her residence, covers about half an acre of land. Mrs. Akinsola has participated in Slow Food seminars and training sessions on how to fertilize the soil organically without the use of synthetic fertilizers. The varieties of crops in the garden include yams, cassava, cocoyam, potatoes, plantains and bananas, melons and vegetables. Her private back yard is a poultry farm with about 300 birds that produce organic eggs which are sold in the community. The family sustains the garden by selling their harvest to the community.
