This garden is located in the Wamali community, in the Tamale metropolitan area. 8 km from the capital city Tamale, in the Northern Region of Ghana.
The size of the garden is 127 m2 with sandy loam soils, which are constantly being fertilized using animal manure to make it more suitable for cropping vegetables. Ridges and beds have been constructed to raise the planted crops, due to the flat nature of the land. Two people from the ten member household work in the garden to ensure its sustainability. Crops grown include peppers, okra, “ayoyo” (a leafy vegetable with the scientific name Corchorus, belonging to the Malvaceae family), “alefu” (a leafy vegetable with the scientific name of Amaranthus Spinosus) and bean leaf. These products are used in stews and soups that accompany the main meal.
