The garden, with its 544 square meters of terrain, has been created at the beginning of 2014 and is supported by the school environmental club which aim is to encourage students to improve their own evironment.
All the 631 students participate to the initiative, helping to cultivate local crops like onions, cabbages, sweet potatos, carrots, etc. Students will use the harvest and the surplus will be sold locally.
The indigenous West Arsi people of this region are mainly farmers, however traditional knowledge and culture is being lost amongst new generations.
Starting from the school educational activities in the gardens, the project aims to assist the West Arsi to adopt more sustainable land management techniques and to build interest and knowledge amongst youth in sustainable agriculture as a viable future.
