Abukete Primary School’s new food garden is cultivated by around 45 pupils from levels 4 to 7 under the guidance of teacher Mr. Ewalu Wilson and local Slow Food representative Oile Charles. Seeds for local vegetable varieties, including cabbages, tomatoes, maize, sweet potatoes, sukuma wiki and saga, have been collected from village home-gardens by students and successfully planted. The garden also has a nursery bed where the students are raising fruit tree seedlings such as mango and oranges. The first harvest was celebrated in December 2011 on an open day that welcomed parents and other visitors to the garden.
