Dgagli White Fig

Dgagli White Fig is a native variety of Djebba fig (Ficus carica L). This fig trees are growing up to 3–5 m tall with large and dark green leaves, its fruit is tear-shaped, 3–5 cm long, with a white colour fruit, its taste is sweet soft reddish flesh containing numerous crunchy seeds that doesn’t have stalk but a large torn ostiole.
It is growing in heights of Mont el Gorrâa in Tunisia, located at an altitude of 600m of Djebba area. The communities have shaped this mountainous landscape to their advantage by integrating agriculture on terraces created by natural geological formations.
The local communities have belief it is a holy fruit’s tree because the fig name is repeated mentioned in holy Quran.
This tree producing single fruits between August and September and is though vulnerable to drought.
The Dgagli White fig is popular variety due to its unique white colour and local communities are preferred for fresh consumption but can also adapts to drying.
This variety presents a crucial income for the inhabitants of Djebba communities whose stages of production and processing are carried out in a defined geographical area.
The number of trees is very less within this geographical area and therefore more vulnerable to disappear and highly threatened by genetic erosion.
