Tortona Strawberry

In the early 20th century, a careful selection of the wild species growing on the hills surrounding Tortona led to the creation of a particularly excellent, highly perfumed strawberry cultivar. Not much bigger than a raspberry, it has a heady fragrance and a sweet, delicate flavor. In the 1930s, it was the star of the local economy. Up to 100 quintals of berries were collected every day during the harvest season, in characteristic baskets made from woven wood. Real Tortona strawberries are highly perishable: picked in the morning, they must be consumed the same day.

Season

Harvesting takes place between May and June, with a very short storage period. As processed is available all year round

The crisis began after the Second World War and was caused by pollination difficulties—too many female plants—and the greater profitability of inferior varieties, like the Volpedo giant strawberry. The few kilos still being picked came from family plots, particularly in Oasi, on the eastern outskirts of the city. The area has by now been almost completely urbanized, but a few producers, joined together in a consortium and protected by the Presidium, have started growing the strawberries in nearby fields.
