This very distinctive chicken breed has a long beard, fleshy red nostrils framing its beak, side whiskers and a tuft of long, pointed feathers sprouting from the top of the head and cascading down over the eyes. Squinting through the feathers, its field of vision is quite limited, which explains its hesitant gait. The plumage can be black, white, gold, tan or silver. In the early 20th century there were still several thousand of the chickens left, but by the 1960s they had almost completely disappeared. The breed was preserved in Italy by the Duca degli Abruzzi Institute in Padua, and thanks to the commitment of a teacher, Gabriele Baldan, who has brought together some small breeders

Paduan hen is available year-round
Back to the archive > Several years ago, an association was founded to protect the breed, Pro Avibus Nostris, which unites eight farmers. At the start, the birds were kept only as a hobby, but since the Presidium was started in 2000, the Paduan Chicken gradually found a small market, making appearances on the menus of restaurants in Padua, in poultry butchers and specialist shops. Currently the producers still have problems connected to the reproduction and improvement of the breed, but much progress has been made: A production protocol specifies open-air grazing and a natural diet based on cereals with no GMO or industrial feed.
