Cortereggio Canavese Piattella Bean

Cortereggio is a small town in the Canavese area, near the Orco River. A white, flat, kidney-shaped bean flourishes in the wetland here, and the low concentration of calcium in the soil makes the skin very thin. The Piattella beans used to be an important economic resource for the local families, who sold them to buyers all over the Canavese area. Traditionally the bean plants were sown alongside corn, so that they could climb up the stalks.

Season

The piattella is harvested from the end of July to the end of September but is available in dried form throughout the year.

The Piattella was still widely cultivated in the 1980s, but was later abandoned. A few growers continued to plant the beans for their own consumption. Luckily, in 1981, a farmer called Mario Boggio had sent a few kilos of Piattella beans to the University of Turin’s germplasm bank to preserve the seed. Now the association of Cortereggio Canavese Piattella producers has formed around the far-sighted Mario, with the aim of reviving and promoting the variety, a potential resource for the whole local area.
