Controne Bean

Controne, set against the splendid backdrop of the fields and olive groves that run up the slopes of the Alburni massif, is known for its oil and beans. The tradition of cultivating legumes here dates back hundreds of years. Farmers plant many different varieties, but it is the white ecotype that has made Controne famous: a small, pure-white bean, round and slightly oval in shape, without speckles or eyes. The pods are also creamy white.

Harvested from the end of October to mid-November and dried for year-round consumption

Many Controne residents grow beans, but few have plots over a certain size. Most tend small vegetable gardens dotted around the countryside, as the area’s geography and steep slopes do not allow extensive cultivation. The producers that belong to the Presidium use eco-friendly techniques, entirely in harmony with the beautiful environment of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park.
