Yako Earth Market – Marché de la Terre de Yako

In Yako, about 100 km from Ouagadougou, the heart of the Earth Market beats. An initiative born from the collaboration between Slow Food Burkina and APEDR, two organizations united in the fight for sustainable development through the promotion of agroecological practices and the protection of biodiversity.
Born in 2020, the market faced unexpected challenges, such as the Covid19 pandemic and political instability, which temporarily halted its activities. But tenacity and passion did not give up. October 16, 2023 marked the rebirth. APEDR reopened the market doors on the occasion of World Food Day, giving new impetus to the dialogue with Slow Food and starting the process of entering the international network of Earth Markets.
Since April 2024, the last Saturday of the month has been transformed into a riot of colors, flavors, and values. The Earth Market of Yako comes to life, offering a wide variety of agroecological products that are "good, clean, and fair."
More than just a place to buy, the market is an experience. An immersion into the authentic gastronomic culture of Burkina Faso, where you meet local producers who share their stories and passion for their work. A welcoming and convivial atmosphere that fosters interaction and creates a sense of community between those who produce and those who consume.
In addition to selling fresh and processed products, the market hosts educational and fun activities to engage people of all ages. Children’s workshops on discovering biodiversity, intercultural exchanges on local products, and tastings of dishes prepared with fresh ingredients from the market.
Sustainability is at the heart of the Earth Market of Yako. Waste recycling, awareness-raising on eco-citizenship, the use of eco-friendly materials, and a code of conduct for producers: everything contributes to reducing the environmental impact and creating a respectful and collaborative work environment.
The Earth Market of Yako actively collaborates with local authorities and organizations, including the Alliance des Cuisiniers Slow Food du Burkina. This collaboration strengthens the market’s position as a driving force for sustainable development in the region.
Around 17 Slow Food producer communities participate in the market, offering a diverse range of products. These include soumbala (a fermented locust bean condiment), shea butter, cabbage, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, potatoes, and papaya. Depending on the season, visitors can also find "yunyan" yam from Arbolé and red rice from Banfora, both Slow Food Presidia products.
