Verde Alternativo de Toluca Earth Market

Toluca is located in the homonymous valley in the centre-west of the State of Mexico, 66 kilometres from Mexico City. This area, which has always been characterised by the biodiversity of its ecosystems, peoples and cultures, is under pressure from increasingly unsustainable production and consumption systems. The food supply has been left in the hands of large retail chains and transnational companies that offer super-processed products. The tianguis and markets available do not always offer a viable option: they often house retailers who buy their products in general markets, from industrial and conventional supply chains.
The Mercadito Verde Alternativo Toluca was founded in 2014 to offer a different food system, mending the relationship between the environment and society, acting as a meeting point between producers and consumers. The market has always adopted the fundamentals of agroecology, trying to combine other messages: the pleasure of food, health and respect for small farmers.
The project aims to establish a link between more than twenty small producers and consumers through participatory agroecological certification, safeguarding the human relationship beyond mere buying and selling.
The Mercadito approached Slow Food with the intention of joining forces, forming a broader network and spreading the philosophy of good, clean and fair locally. Since 2021, it has been part of the International Earth Markets network.
