The Earth Market in Sommacampagna, a town located a few kilometres from Verona and Lake Garda, was the first Earth Market in Veneto, born in 2018 from the efforts of Slow Food Garda Veronese. It is held in the historic centre, which saw the birth of the Ancient Agricultural Fair of Sommacampagna in the 17th century. The Republic of Venice, seeing its shipping traffic decline, played its commercial policy on land routes, drawing new pathways to facilitate trade with northern Europe. Thus the Serenissima intensified markets and trade fairs, one of the most important of which was Sommacampagna.
The Sommacampagna Earth Market is organised in collaboration with the Sommacampagna municipality. It involves the participation of farmers, producers and food artisans selected by Slow Food. This is a short supply chain market where you can shop conscientiously for seasonal fruit, pasta, rice, extra-virgin olive oil, cheese, meat, cured meats, eggs, fish products, honey, jams and bread.
The products sold are of certain provenance and meet three precise quality criteria that aim not only to enhance the value of the products, but also to safeguard biodiversity, the roots and food culture of a community and the landscape of the area in which they are produced.
Good: fresh and in season, healthy, with a taste that stimulates and satisfies the senses.
Clean: produced locally, using environmentally sustainable cultivation and production methods and rejecting transgenic organisms.
Fair: affordable prices for consumers and fair compensation and working conditions for all those involved in production. Moreover, these products preserve the food culture of the region and contribute to the defence of biodiversity.
The aim of the Sommacampagna Earth Market is not only to be a place where you can buy directly from those who cultivate, breed, produce and process the products of the land with care and respect for the environment, but also a place where consumers can come closer to producers and where community, sustainability and diversity can be promoted, through activities and events that arise from the synergies of the area and the people or agricultural producers and artisans participating in the market.
The management committee is responsible for the operation of the market with an eye to the environment, striving to produce as little waste as possible, with a focus on energy saving and the use of plastic-free consumer materials that are as biodegradable as possible.
Sommacampagna is easy to reach by car (Sommacampagna exit, A4 and A22 motorways; ring roads). It is located 12 km from the city of Verona and the eastern shore of Lake Garda, a location with a strong tourist presence, in an area with hilly landscapes overlooking the lake and historical places to visit, also known for Custoza wine and the Slow Food Presidium of Broccoletto di Custoza.
