The Slow Food Earth Market of Sommacampagna (VR) is the first Earth Market born in Veneto, in 2018, thanks to the dialogue established by Slow Food Garda Veronese with the municipal administration of Sommacampagna. It is held every first Sunday of the month, from 9.00 to 13.00, in Piazza della Repubblica, the square with the pleasant shade of centuries-old trees, located in the historic centre, which provides a wonderful setting for the family of producers and consumers that has been created in what was once the beating heart of the village.
All the producers are selected by Slow Food Garda Veronese on the basis of their characteristics and Slow Food’s three quality criteria, namely Good, Clean and Fair. They represent around 50 small, mostly family-run businesses, very attentive to safeguarding biodiversity and sustainability, mostly organic, and come from the province of Verona and the neighbouring areas of Mantua, Brescia, Trentino and Vicenza.
The market stalls offer a wide variety of products, always linked to the availability of small-scale produce and the seasons: vegetables and fruit, bread, pasta, baked goods, rice, flour, pulses, cheese, cold meats, meat, eggs, extra virgin olive oil, wine, beer, apple cider, jams, honey, syrups, herbal products, truffles, saffron, chilli peppers, snails, spirulina, kombucha, herbal products, natural cosmetics, essential oils, seedlings and aromatic plants. There is also a wide range of Slow Food Presidia from all over Italy and local Presidia, such as the Custoza broccoletto, which is sold fresh and fried, and which the restaurateurs of Sommacampagna and the hamlet of Custoza use in numerous dishes combined with the local wine, Custoza, in winter.
There are many new features that enrich the Earth Market at every edition, transforming the square into a market where the purchase of quality products is combined with a desire to create culture.
Alongside the ever-increasing number of producers, there are educational activities linked to the adoption of healthy and sustainable eating habits and lifestyles (e.g. open workshops on waste-free cooking), and cultural initiatives aimed at discovering and promoting the area (e.g. guided tours of historical sites). When you arrive in the square, there is a quiet, welcoming atmosphere and you can feel the enthusiasm of the producers, who are always ready to talk to consumers, tell them about their products, what defines their quality and justifies their prices.
The Earth Market has become an essential monthly event in the life of the community, with loyal buyers returning time after time and visitors from outside the province and region. Many Italian and foreign tourists also come to the Earth Market in spring and summer and take home an experience that offers them a journey of discovery into the biodiversity of the local food industry and the beauty of the area, famous for its hilly landscapes overlooking the lake and the scene of battles of the Risorgimento.
The Earth Market is located 12 km from Verona and the eastern shore of Lake Garda and is easily reached by car thanks to its proximity to the Sommacampagna motorway exit (A4 and A22 motorways), ring roads and ample parking around Piazza della Repubblica.
