Sistelo Earth Market

Sistelo is an essentially mountainous territory, furrowed by deep valleys through which the Vez River and its numerous tributaries flow. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and part of the Peneda Gerês National Park, it is an area of extraordinary heritage, magnificent landscapes and rugged orography. The average gradients are very high (17%), with altitudes varying between 180 and 1370 metres in just 7 km. The resident population is 199, most of whom work in agriculture (around 87%). Recently, thanks to public investment, the tourism sector has begun to gain importance, with some traditional houses converted into tourist accommodation and restaurants opened.

Sistelo is characterised by its terrace complex, which constitutes one of the most important, impressive and breathtaking man-made landscapes in the whole of Portugal, comparable to the Douro wine region.
In the municipality of Sistelo, a bi-weekly market is held, albeit in a different location, in Lugar da Estrica, on the 12th and 28th of each month. This market is centuries old and focuses on a traditional market for the sale of livestock (cattle, horses, sheep and goats). We are in a mountainous area and the main economic activity is the extensive rearing of native breeds such as the cachena breed, a product of the arca dos sabores.

The Sistelo farmers’ market has been in operation since October 2022 at the behest of the Sistelo county council, in particular its president, as a way to help its residents sell their local products, helping to improve the income of the local population and economically enhance local products. Since then, the market has been frequented mainly by the local population and residents of the surrounding areas. It is also visited by tourists, mainly Portuguese and Spanish. It is appreciated by chefs in local restaurants and tourist centres.

The market involves many actors: the Municipality of Arcos de Valdevez, the Local Development Association of the Lima Valley, the Slow Food Convivium of Alto Minho together with the local population, tourist accommodation and entertainment operators. It is managed and promoted by the Sistelo Provincial Council and has been implemented with financial support from the Portuguese Rural Development Programme, as part of its measure to promote short supply chain markets.

The Sistelo Market has always been guided by the values of Slow Food, as it promotes direct contact between consumers and small, virtuous producers and encourages their training. From 2023, it will officially become part of the Earth Markets network.

The Sistelo Earth Market can be reached by car, with ample parking available.
