The Sannio Earth Market was launched in Benevento in 2018 by the Slow Food Benevento Convivium, in collaboration with other convoys in the province, institutions and the many associations that actively work in the area.
The Market is a community project, built around the idea that food can become an instrument of social cohesion, creating a meeting place and exchange between small local producers and consumers arriving from the nearby provinces of Caserta, Avellino and Benevento.
The Terra del Sannio market takes place in the market area of Piazza Risorgimento, a central area close to the main tourist attractions (a 5-minute walk takes you to the Longobard Church of Santa Sofia and the Rocca dei Rettori). This is a historic area which, on other days of the week, hosts numerous local fruit, vegetable and craft markets.
There are around 30 producers, selected within a radius of 40 km from the market site. The offer is varied and includes many items for daily consumption, such as baked goods (including the yellow and fragrant Saragolla bread from Benevento, a Slow Food Presidium), wine and craft beers, excellent raw milk cheeses, eggs, honey and beekeeping products, and extra virgin olive oil.
Among the Slow Food Presidia are the Castelpoto sausage and the yellow Sanniti Verneteca tomato, a variety typical of the foothills of the Sanniti Apennines which, harvested between August and September, can be stored throughout the winter.
To taste some of the local specialities, it is possible to buy a quick snack prepared with ingredients from the producers present, or to reach the nearby “Osteria Da Nunzia” with a ten-minute walk, to treat yourself to a good typical dish cooked with care.
“Look, ask, listen, buy’ is the motto of the Sannio Earth Market which, in addition to displaying selected, top-quality products, frequently offers many educational activities for young and old, involving local craftsmen.
The market prohibits the use of plastic for tasting and selling products and great attention is paid to preventing and combating waste: all perishable products are donated to Caritas Benevento at the end of the event.
The market is a quarter of an hour’s walk from Benevento Porta Rufina station, and can be reached by bus and car. There is also ample parking in Piazza Risorgimento.
