Samstag Märt Earth Market

The Samstag Märt is located in Gressoney Saint Jean, in the province of Aosta, Italy. Gressoney Saint Jean is a small alpine municipality of 824 inhabitants whose main town is located at an altitude of 1,385 m a.s.l. It is situated in the eastern Aosta Valley, in a scenic setting that is particularly interesting for the views offered of the Lyskamm glacier and the imposing Monte Rosa massif. Gressoney’s history is closely linked to the Walser community, a population of Germanic origin that arrived in the area more than eight centuries ago across the Teodulo Pass. The traditional cultural heritage, kept alive by the Walser Cultural Center, is still reflected today in the original architectural expressions with the typical stadel, in the spoken dialect, Titsch, and in the precious women’s costume, also worn by Queen Margherita of Savoy, who spent her summer vacations in Gressoney. The first sovereign of Italy, a great lover of the mountains, gave great impetus to the development of these places, which became a destination for many tourists.

The market began to take shape in June 2016 at the behest of the Paysage à Manger farm, which started vegetable production and direct sales at the garden that year. To enliven the sales moment, it had been decided to have other producers in the area converge at the garden. The group of producers grew over time and was formalized in 2019 by becoming a network of producers and officially starting Samstag Märt. Thanks to the training process initiated by the network that year, with Slow Food among the chosen trainers, the network came to mature the will to have the market initiative recognized as an Earth Market in 2023.

Today, the market offers the opportunity to buy very fresh vegetables and small fruits, preserves, honey, goat cheese, eggs, bread and cookies, wine: local products that meet the production criteria identified by Slow Food realizing a direct contact with the producer himself and the possibility of the creation of a human relationship and trust. The issue of sustainability is close to the heart of all market producers, who are actively engaged in reducing packaging and choosing sustainable materials for it.

Educational and entertainment activities have always been organized at the Market. The latest in order of time have been: the theatrical performance “Story of Earth” about the life of Vandana Shiva, “taste workshops” to make known the production process of the products of all the producers of the market, activities in the vegetable garden aimed at the children of the summer center, musical animation of the market with the group “Catafolk,” path of meetings for the construction of scenarios of the future “Gressoney 2030,” adhesion to the international baking initiative “Lo Pan Ner.”

The initiative has the support of the Gressoney Saint Jean Municipal Administration and the Aosta Valley LAG. The market also adheres to the Gressoney Tourist Consortium, participating in tourist events and taking advantage of the Consortium’s communication media to promote the activities taking place during the market.

The Market can be reached by public transportation by bus that covers the route from Pont Saint Martin to Gressoney. The nearest bus stop is 230 m away (a 3-minute walk). Pont Saint Martin can be reached by multiple public transport solutions, including the railway line, from all parts of Italy. The market can of course also be reached by car, for which there are about 30 free public parking lots located about a hundred meters away along the orographic right bank of the Lys stream. Interested parties within a radius of 4 km can reach us comfortably on foot or by bicycle as the market place is located in a barycentric position with respect to the flat area of the valley floor.
