The San Casciano Val di Pesa Earth Market is promoted by the Pro Loco of San Casciano Val di Pesa, the SlowFood Firenze APS Convivium, the SlowFood Community “Un Turismo Sostenibile a Mercatale” and the Municipality of San Casciano Val di Pesa.
This project stems from the common desire to valorise the products present in the territory of the Municipality of San Casciano and neighbouring municipalities that respect the principle of good, clean and fair production, as well as the education of citizens on a correct diet that takes into account all the factors linked to food: from production to processing. The market is an opportunity for tourists to rediscover a hamlet that is increasingly less frequented and, at the same time, to restore a commercial service that is becoming less and less available to local residents.
The offer, predominantly local and small-scale, includes organic or otherwise eco-sustainable produce, cheeses, eggs and cured meats from extensive farming that is truly respectful of animal welfare.
To coincide with the monthly Earth Market, a calendar of events aimed at citizens and businesses will be organised to increase attention to proper nutrition and food quality and promote greater awareness of environmental issues such as biodiversity, climate change, recycling, etc.
There will be cognitive, educational and training meetings with local companies on new forms of breeding, permaculture and synergistic agriculture. Eventually, the aim will be to involve the restaurants present for the creation of an ‘Earth Market menu’.
The location is easy to reach by car and there is ample parking, including free parking, in Piazza Generale Tellini, Via Pietro Nenni, Piazza del Popolo and Via dei Cofferi. It is possible to reach the hamlet of Mercatale using the extra-urban Tpl (local public transport) buses of the Region of Tuscany run by Autolinee Toscane (www.at-bus.it).
