The Cali Organic Earth Market (Mercado de la Tierra Organico de Cali) is the only organic market in the city of Cali. The aim of the market is to promote the production and distribution of healthy food at fair prices and in sufficient quantities and varieties.
The Earth market is the Ecological Farmers’ Market of Asoproorganicos (Asociacion De Productores Orgánicos Del Valle Del Cauca Y Cauca), an organization of organic farmers and producers established in 2001, promoted and sponsored by the Corporación Valle del Cauca (CVC). Its institutional mission is to protect the soil and water of the Valle del Cauca and stimulate green markets.
The market is attended by 30 producers representing more than 70 peasant families and agro-ecological producer groups from plots and farms located under the jurisdiction of 12 municipalities: Dagua, El Cerrito, Florida, Jamundí, La Cumbre, Palmira and Cali in the Department of Valle del Cauca and Caldono, Morales, Totoró, Silvia and Suárez in the Department of Cauca.
The rich variety of the tropical fruits sold in the market is made possible by the diversity of the temperature zones in which the producers are located. Arazá, jaboticaba, uchuva and blackberry are sold fresh or in the form of jams, preserves and juices. The producers grow their aromatic herbs and vegetables from their own seeds, which they preserve from harvest to harvest, and the market is part of a movement of native seed custodians that brings together the farmers who participate in the Valley’s Green Market seed exchange network. Many of the processed products, such as oven bread, cambray empanada, pandebono, almojábanas, arepas and cucas, are made from ancestral recipes.
The market is strongly community-driven, with customers keen not only to buy food but also to participate in a permanent exchange of knowledge. Since 2007, an alliance between the producers and consumers who are part of the participatory guarantee system has been a regular presence at the market. The consumers take part in markets, in visits to farms and in periodic controls. This alliance between organic consumers and producers has generated a social fabric that transcends market exchanges, its aim being to rescue the value of the work of farmers as the foundation for a public ethic and a culture of trust.
