Located just outside Ouagadougou, the Saaba Earth Market brings together small-scale agroecological producers and conscious consumers in one of Burkina Faso’s fastest-growing areas. Launched by Slow Food and AJEAK with support from local authorities and communities, the market offers a dignified space for local producers to sell directly—free from intermediaries and competition with conventional products.
Held in a well-known public area near Saaba’s former town hall, the market is more than a place to buy food: it’s a vibrant hub where local biodiversity is celebrated and food culture is shared. From fresh vegetables to traditional processed foods, all products meet the "good, clean and fair" criteria.
The market is run by a participatory community of producers, consumers, and activists, coordinated by a local committee. Monthly meetings and training sessions support transparency and shared decision-making.
Cultural and educational activities include guided tours for children, traditional music and dance, and intergenerational storytelling on the value of local foods. Visitors can also enjoy delicious meals prepared by cooks from the Slow Food Cooks’ Alliance using ingredients sourced from local gardens and processing communities.
Environmental and social sustainability are key: waste collection systems, plastic-free practices, and a producer code of conduct ensure respect for people and planet.
The Saaba Earth Market is a powerful tool for change—supporting local economies, protecting biodiversity, and helping build a fairer, more sustainable food system in Burkina Faso.
