Inaugurated in October 2013, the Maputo Earth Market stems from a collaboration between the Italian non-governmental organization GVC and Slow Food. It is held on the second and last Saturday of eanch month under the pergola of the Jardim do Parque dos Continuadores, located in Avenida Martires da Machava, and two Thursdays a month in the courtyard of the Predio Jat 4, in the Avenida Zedequias Manganhela
The market boasts 15 growers and producers, all from the province of Maputo: Macaneta, Catembe, Boane and other green areas surrounding the capital. Shoppers will find many types of foods: traditional street food such as bajias (Mozambican bean fritters), fruit and vegetables, rice, fruit juices and traditional alcoholic beverages, jams, peanut butter, fresh eggs and fish – everything under the banner of local, seasonal, clean and artisanal products.
The Maputo Earth Market was created as part of a project promoting sustainable agriculture funded by the Emilia-Romagna Regional Authority and coordinated by GVC, with the support of UNAC, the National Farmers Union of Mozambique; the non-governmental organization Essor and the Slow Food Muteko-Waho Convivium. The Fondazione Cariplo, Lombardy Regional Authority and Deafal also fund training on agricultural techniques, marketing and the creation of proucers’ associations.
