The Cilento Earth Market was born in 2017 in Agropoli, thanks to the Slow Food Cilento Convivium, with the collaboration of the Municipality of Agropoli, the Vita Salernum Vitis Consortium (Consortium for the protection of the PDO and PGI wines of the province of Salerno) and the partners of the Cibolento project, as well as numerous associations in the area for the realisation of some specific editions.
From 2022 the Cilento Earth Market embarks on a new collaboration with the town of Capaccio Paestum, where the activities will move. Capaccio is a meeting point for the villages in the hills that are part of the historical area of Alto Cilento.
The vocation of the area is mainly tourism, given the presence of the sea and the natural assets linked to the National Park of Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni. At 2 km from Capaccio, we find the archaeological park of Paestum and Velia, so in a few minutes it is possible to reach the most imposing and best preserved of the Magna Grecia cities.
In the area there are several excellent dairies producing buffalo mozzarella from Campania. The Cilento Earth Market is held in an evocative location, inside an old tobacco factory, an example of industrial archaeology with an important historical and cultural value.
At each edition, the market hosts about 25 producers from all over Cilento and the nearby Sele plain, within a radius of about 40 km from Capaccio. They adopt environmentally friendly, organic or integrated cultivation methods, in line with the philosophy promoted by Slow Food. In addition, there are occasional producers who actively participate in other Earth Markets in Campania, as well as some producers from Lucania. Visitors can do their shopping and take part in workshops organised in agreement with the producers, moments of encounter designed to get to know the companies and taste their specialities. There are also reading and creative activities for children.
The Earth Market offers a wide variety of fresh and preserved products: fruit and vegetables, pulses (including Cicerale Chickpea and Controne Bean, two Slow Food Presidia), flours and cereals, bread and biscuits. Among the extra virgin olive oil producers there is also a Presidium of the Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil, as well as the Presidium of the Ammaccata Salella Oliva del Cilento. Among the cheeses on sale, in addition to the tasty buffalo mozzarella, you can find the Cacioricotta del Cilento Presidium, a product of the grazing of the Cilento goat, an indigenous breed listed on Slow Food’s Ark of Taste. There are also honey and beehive products, Giffoni hazelnuts and specialities such as the Presidia of the Vatolla onion, the Fico Monnato of Prignano Cilento and the Fusillo of Felitto, a perforated macaroni skilfully handmade by the town’s women.
The entire market area is subject to careful waste separation and only compostable material is used for the tasting service.
The Cilento Earth Market can be reached by car or by public transport: the train station (Capaccio Roccadaspide) is about 2.5 km from the Tabacchificio, while the bus service stops at Torre Cafasso at 800 metres.
