Bologna Earth Markets

Bologna, the renowned "dotta, grassa, e turrita" (learned, fat, and turreted) city, boasts two lively Earth Markets that embody Slow Food’s principles of good, clean, and fair food. These markets serve as hubs for fostering connections between farmers, consumers, and the community, promoting sustainable food practices and culinary traditions.
Nestled within the historic walls of Bologna, the Mercato della Terra del Novale finds its home in Piazza Giosue Carducci, a square steeped in literary heritage. Inspired by Carducci’s poem "Visione," which speaks of the novale, a fallow land reborn into cultivation, this market aptly reflects its mission to revitalize the local food system.
Established in 2017, the market is a testament to the collaboration between Slow Food Bologna, Cooperativa Sociale Eta Beta, and Azienda Agricola Scarpellini Matteo. These deeply rooted organizations envisioned a market that transcended mere sales, incorporating food education and social integration into its core.
The success of the Mercato della Terra del Novale paved the way for a second market in 2019, located in the Piazza del Ex Dazio in the Corticella neighborhood. This expansion aimed to bring Slow Food’s message to underserved areas of the city, revitalizing the neighborhood while fostering a vibrant food community.
Both Earth Markets showcase an array of approximately 15 vendors, each committed to Slow Food’s values. These include local producers, organic farmers, small-scale agricultural enterprises, and social cooperatives that employ individuals with limited opportunities.
The market tables overflow with seasonal produce, from fresh fruits and vegetables to handcrafted pasta and bread made from ancient grains. Preserves, eggs, cheeses, honey, olive oil, and cured meats complete the culinary tapestry, with special seasonal offerings adding variety and excitement.
The Earth Markets of Bologna extend their reach beyond the sale of produce, actively engaging the community through educational initiatives and fostering a sense of belonging. Workshops, cooking demonstrations, and tastings provide opportunities for visitors to deepen their knowledge of food origins, preparation techniques, and the importance of sustainable food choices.
The markets also serve as social hubs, where neighbors gather to share stories, exchange recipes, and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Bologna. Children’s activities and storytelling sessions further strengthen the community bond, ensuring that the Slow Food ethos is passed on to future generations.
