Barcellona Earth Market – Mercat de la Terra di Barcelona

Slow Food Barcelona’s Earth Market has been running since June 2015 and is held every Saturday from 9am to 3pm at the Jardins de les Tres Xemeneies.
The gardens where the market takes place occupy part of the site of the former Barcelona Traction Company limited power plant, commonly known as La Canadiense.
The location is easily accessible thanks to good public transport links and the wide avenue on which it is located. The Mercado de la Tierra is 150 m from the Paral-lel metro station (Line 2 and Line 3). Both lines facilitate connections with other metro and railway lines. On the same avenue, a few metres away, there are several bus stops (21, D20, H14, V11). Near the market there is a pay car park (Avinguda Paral-lel 39).

Slow Food Barcelona wanted to set up the market because in 2015 there was no weekly farmers’ market in the city or even a municipal market in the Poble-Sec neighbourhood (from which, at present, most of the clientele comes).
The Mercat de la Terra offered an opportunity for a direct encounter between producer (of local and sustainable food) and consumer. It offers food products, handicrafts, natural cosmetics and it is possible, depending on the time of year and availability, to find products from the Ark of Taste or Slow Food Presidia.

At each edition, the Mercat de la Terra sets up a play area where children can colour and be entertained. In addition to shopping, it is always possible to participate in taste workshops or taste seasonal dishes based on the exhibitors’ products, such as grilled artichokes from November to January, grilled leeks from February to March, grilled sardines between May and June and Paellas and other popular dishes in the remaining months.

The market is supported by the Barcelona City Council and the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food (DARP), together with the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), as part of the promotion of direct sales. The market is also self-financed both from its own funds and from the fees paid by exhibitors.
