Alba is a city known worldwide for its fine food and wine production, set in a landscape of great beauty and value: since 2014, the Langhe have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. For this reason, the Earth Market is attended by a wide and varied clientele, a high percentage of whom are tourists and foreigners.
The project was launched in 2010 on the initiative of the Alba Langhe and Roero Slow Food Convivium, with the support and active collaboration of the municipality.
The Alba Langhe e Roero Earth Market takes place in conjunction with the town market, but is distinguished by the presence only of artisanal products from small producers and farmers, selected within a 50 km radius according to the main quality criteria indicated by Slow Food. Adherence to these characteristics is regularly monitored by the association that now runs the market, in collaboration with the Condotta.
It is possible to buy fruit and vegetables, wine, honey and cheese, cured meats and processed products made from the tasty local hazelnuts, bread and baked goods.
From time to time, the market also hosts producers from neighbouring regions (especially rice, olive oil and Ligurian fish products), as well as socially oriented projects, such as those of prison producers.
In autumn, the Slow Food Alba, Langhe and Roero Convivium organises "Osterias meet the market", an event in which traditional dishes are prepared in the square in collaboration with neighbouring Alba osterias.
The Market is located in a pedestrian area, but it is possible to find parking in some of the squares situated a short distance away.
