St. Maria Goretti Makondo is a primary school with 350 pupils. It is located in Makondo village in Ndagwe sub-county, Lwengo district. It has a school garden located on small plot of land measuring 67 m2. The garden is cultivated by 15 children, six boys and nine girls. The main crops grown are eggplants, “jobyo” (spider weed), cabbage, onions, tomatoes and “dodo” (amaranth). The produce is mainly used to supplement the children’s meals. Pests are controlled using a mixture of tobacco, ash, onions and urine. Soil is managed using manure from crop residues and composite food wastes from the kitchen. Water is collected from the spring using jerrycans, which also act as watering cans. The water well is located 2.5 kilometers from the school.
There is a plan for the school to own land for the school garden.
