Born in Vibo Valentia, Calabria, in 1957, Silvio Greco joined the Slow Food network in 2003. Since 2004 he has held the posts of Vibo Valentia Convivium leader, regional president of Calabria, national advisor, president of the Slow Fish Scientific Committee, member of the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity Board of Directors, and director of environmental issues for Slow Food Italy.
He graduated in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Oceanography. He has had a long academic career: a student at Federico II di Napoli University and the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Pollenzo (Cuneo), he was a researcher at the University of Messina and the director of both ISPRA (the Institute for Environmental Protection and Research) and ICRAM (the Central Institute of Applied Research of the Sea) in Rome.
His papers are published in national and international journals and span topics including the dissemination of scientific information regarding fishing, aquaculture, biodiversity, protected marine areas, ecotoxicology, decontamination and waste. He is a member of the WWF Italy Scientific Committee, collaborates with different international organizations (FAO, ACCOBAMS, CIESM and IWC) and has held the post of regional Environmental Minister for the region of Calabria.
