Procida lemon is a local ecotype probably originating from the Femminello Ovale variety. This lemon is cultivated on the Island of Procida, following methods and techniques handed down from one generation to another. It has been cultivated at a family level for a long time, but its market production has started only after the second World War. The demand for it was so high that lemon became more remunerative than vines, so that many vineyards were uprooted to make some more room for lemon trees. At the moment many hectares of such lemon orchards are abandoned, as the product is experiencing a down in popularity. It is a large sized lemon, characterized by a particularly thick albedo (the spongy white layer below the yellow peel), so thick to be called ‘bread’ by the islanders. It is elliptic in shape with a coarse peel, turning light yellow when completely ripe. Its perfume is intense, and its flavour pleasantly acidic. The connoisseurs of this fruit taste it sliced as it is or with a pinch of sugar.
