Garfagnina Cow

Garfagnina cattle is native of Lucchese Garfagnana, and finds its ancestors in the primitive Podolica breed. After World War II its population has strongly decreased, and it has almost completely been replaced by Bruna and Frisona. Today only a few hundreds heads are still surviving, mainly grazing in the pastures. It is grey in colour, with darker halos around its eyes, on its ears’ edges, neck’s sides, thighs and shoulder. Veals are born wheaten. Horns are black until the second year of life, then they turn yellow at the base with a black tip. Also the tongue, mitten, claws, the ears’ and tail’s tips are black. Once a three-puropse breed, today it is mainly used as a milking cow, with a yield of 30 quintals in 280 days. It is still bred in Garfagnana, Tuscany.
