Limón criollo
The variety Citrus aurantifolia (Christm.) is highly prized in Cuba and is commonly known as creole lime. This fruit can be found growing wild in the savannas of Peralejo, in bushes near riverbanks and inland at low and medium altitude. It is grown by people mainly in rural areas and it is used both in recipes for traditional Cuban meals, and in natural medicine.
During the 1990s lime plantations declined and the product is at risk of disappearing due to the effect of time, as there have previously been no plans, either by the state or by plantation owners, to protect this species. In addition, livestock farming also does not include recovery plans.
Now, thanks to the community project, plantations are increasing through nurseries, and today there is more of a culture to protect this species.
