Black Calabrian pig, featuring a slow growth in weight (this probably causing its abandoning), is particularly suited for wild or semi wild breeding, as resistant to the typical swine diseases such as bronchitis, muscular and articular troubles and stomach illnesses. Its meat is very good for curing, yielding excellent results. The population plummeted since the Seventies and is now on the brink of extinction, even though it has many qualities such as high maternal aptitude, strong sexual vigour, rusticity, adaptability to pastures and top-quality meat. It is still bred in the province of Cosenza and in Sila National Park.
